Closure of Transfer Station
Barge operator Mark Phillips of Kawau Earthmovers has received advice that the Lawrie Road Transfer Station (on the road to Snell’s beach) will be closed from 1st October.
Northland Waste’s lease of the facility expires on 30 September, Auckland Council have advised they are shutting the site for at least six months and possibly longer while site remediation work takes place. They are hoping to get a new recovery facility built as soon as possible to service the community, but this will be dependent on Council’s waste plan.
The nearest alternative transfer stations are at Silverdale or Hakaru – both of which Mark believes will be prohibitively expensive for Kawau people.
There is a possibility that the Lawrie Road Transfer Station will remain open until the end of the year but no decisions have been made around that.
Our Kawau community is advised that if you have plans to barge off or take on your own account waste material for the Lawrie Road Transfer Station to do so before the end of September. If there is change to that date we will let you know.
